⚡️ Pre-training shooting game that led to Gearoid Hegarty’s thunderbolt for Limerick — with Pat Ryan

All-Ireland winner Pat Ryan shows us a pre-training shooting game that Limerick do and how it led to the Gearoid Hegarty thunderbolt against Kilkenny.

Former Limerick hurler and Doon star Pat Ryan reckons Gearoid Hegarty’s All-Ireland final goal came from one thousand practice shots.

The 2020 Hurler of the Year has been devastating on the big days for the Treaty County, scoring 0-7 against Waterford, 2-2 against Cork, and 1-5 against the Cats in the three most recent deciders.

Ryan, a winner of three All-Ireland titles in green, was at the recent OurGame Coaching Clinic in Valley Rovers, Co Cork alongside Michael Fennelly and Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh.

Much of Ryan’s focus was on goalscoring, which included a pre-training shooting game that many of the Limerick forwards participate in.

Starting on the ’21, a player jabs up the ball, takes their steps, and unleashes a shot designed for the corner of the net between the cone and the post — where a goalkeeper is unlikely to get it.

It took just such a shot for the rangy wing-forward to beat Eoin Murphy in the 2022 All-Ireland final.

“Shane (Stapleton) was talking to me beforehand about Gearoid Hegarty’s goal in the All-Ireland final against Kilkenny last year.

“Where did it end up? I don’t know if ye remember it. (It went) right into the side-netting.

“In the ten months up to that, I’d say he did it 100 times per month up to that (game against Kilkenny).”

The Doon man, who was recently omitted from the Limerick panel ahead of the 2023 championship, explains that the drill can be adjusted for young players by bringing the cone further away from the post.
