Enda and Steven discuss the draw between Sligo and Kildare in the All-Ireland series group stages last weekend.
Former Mayo star Enda Varley says it would be a travesty if Kildare fail to qualify from their All-Ireland group, which also includes Dublin and Roscommon.
The Lilywhites surprisingly drew their opening game with Sligo, which is seen as a huge disappointment after pushing the Dubs so hard in their Leinster SFC semi-final defeat.
“I thought Sligo came back in that came and Niall Murphy kicked a boomer, and it’s nice to see him and Sean Carrabine getting some recognition,” says Varley.
“Division 2 versus Division 4, before the promotion,” Steven Poacher says of Kildare v Sligo.
“I know it was an away game for Kildare, but it is still very disappointing.
“It was a wee bit of the Kildare of old. We have chatted about maybe having a flaky mentality and you go to Croke Park and put in that shift against Dublin, and then concede the exact same amount of scores against Sligo.
“They only conceded 14 points against Dublin, they conceded the same against Sligo who don’t pose the same level of offensive threat that Dublin have.
“You just have to be asking questions about that mentality. Was there a complacency against Sligo?
“Tony (McEntee) has done a brilliant job with Sligo. He has got them pumping, they’re flying, their Under-20s went well this year.
“Kildare, on the flipside, should have been the exact same. Their Under-20s won an All-Ireland title, the county is on the rise, they have got a lot of young talent coming through.
“There’s a couple of players on that team like Jimmy Hyland who have won Under-20 titles themselves when Davy Burke was the manager.
“This is the thing, the footballers are there, and people in Kildare think I have something against them or something personally. I don’t.
“I just feel they are a county that are massively underachieving and I think it is a giant waiting to be awoken. I really do.
“If Kildare don’t make it out of this group, it will be a travesty,” Verney concludes.
“It could come down to who loses by the last when Sligo and Kildare play Dublin,” Poacher adds.
“I think Roscommon will beat Sligo and Kildare, so to could come down to score difference.”
