“Can’t see anything coming from Wexford this year”

Shane Stapleton and Michael Verney review the clash between Limerick and Wexford, with the Treaty flying and the Models in bother just now

Limerick will go into this Saturday’s league semi-final clash with Tipperary in buoyant mood.

Their sole defeat of this NHL campaign came against Cork, and it was only late on when they faded out after taking a gamut of their star men off the field.

In truth, John Kiely will be unperturbed by that result, and he can instead feel he has given lots of game-time to budding options.

For the opposition from last weekend, Wexford, a long break until a Leinster SHC opener against Galway on April 22 is just what the doctor ordered.

“By the sounds of it, Darragh Egan is happy to see the finishing line with the league… it’s a fairly frightening injury list,” said Michael Verney, before referencing the Model manager’s quotes after the game.

The break “is absolutely ideal for us because we took the field today without nine of the team that played [last year’s] quarter-final against Clare,” said Egan afterwards.

“We have 11 lads injured at present … some of them are in a massive race against time, so if we’d another knockout game next weekend we would be just trying to plug holes.”

Their concerns include five players who suffered injuries in Cork the previous week: Matthew O’Hanlon (ankle), Liam Óg McGovern (knee), Conor McDonald (calf), Damien Reck (hamstring) and Diarmuid O’Keeffe (dead leg).

As well as that, Liam Ryan hasn’t played since severing a ligament at the top of his finger February 4. “He’s definitely going to be under pressure to make the Galway game,” Egan added.
