The Tipperary county board have narrowed the search for their next senior hurling manager down to a choice between Brendan Cummins and Willie Maher, OurGame understands.
Liam Cahill was the early favourite to take the job but when negotiations broke down, the Ballingarry man made a decision to remain with Waterford.
Wexford GAA announced on Friday morning that Darragh Egan is to be ratified as their successor to Davy Fitzgerald later in the month, narrowing the field further for Tipperary.
Cummins, a five-time All Star goalkeeper who played for Tipp from 1995 to 2013, was set to be named as under-20 Premier boss but is now in consideration for the senior job.
His CV includes coaching experience as part of Fintan OโConnorโs Kerry hurling ticket, and has been a key part of the Sunday Game team for the past number of years.
Maher, who also lined out for the county before his progress was halted by a serious eye injury, has coaching experience with Tipperary and Dublin underage teams, and as part of the Waterford senior hurling team under Derek McGrath.
He also has managed at club level with Cuala (winning 2019 and 2020 county titles) before more recently taking over Kilkenny outfit Bennettsbridge.
Should Maher get the job, it would set up an intriguing first round of the 2022 Munster hurling championship between Tipp and the Deise against his fellow Ballingarry native Cahill.
It is understood that the county board are hoping to meet with both candidates in the coming days, before finalising their decision.
