Darragh Egan (Wexford)
Tongues are still wagging in Wexford after they sensationally blew a 17-point lead against Westmeath last Sunday to leave themselves teetering with an unimaginable relegation from the Leinster SHC.
Darragh Egan is feeling the heat heading into their do-or-die clash with Kilkenny this Sunday where victory is needed to assure them of their provincial place and avoid the possibility of dropping back to the Joe McDonagh Cup.
Wexford legend Tom Dempsey has called for Model supporters to get out in force for what is one of the biggest games in the county’s history, possibly the most important since their 1996 All-Ireland SHC final against Limerick.
“My own feeling is there is little value in trying to analyse what happened and we have all winter to do that,” Dempsey said in a Facebook post earlier this week.
“For this week we must all come together supporters, team, management and create a unified momentum that will give this game our best shot.
“We are a proud hurling county and our history tells us that anything is achievable if we move together and that is on and off the field.”
Egan knows that they are “fighting for our lives” with relegation a real possibility for a county that lifted the Bob O’Keeffe Cup just four years ago.
If they lose to Kilkenny, combined with victory for Antrim over Westmeath, Wexford will suffer an unheralded demotion and they need to pull a performance from somewhere with everything at stake.
