3 football player match-ups to savour this weekend

Conor Breslin highlights the most intriguing player v player battles that will take place across the football landscape this weekend

Daniel Flynn v Ryan O’Toole
Another inside line match-up, but noteworthy in the sense of where Kildare currently stands in this campaign.

At the weekend, the Leinster side produced one of their best performances of a deeply frustrating season and Daniel Flynn, the Lilywhites’ electrifying talisman, was at the heart of their performance.

What’s interesting here is that Flynn has not started for Kildare since their league game against Louth last spring.

In total, he has only started two out of 12 league and SFC games while making eight cameo appearances.

On Sunday against Roscommon, he converted a first-half mark following a fine high catch, bringing his seasonal haul to 0-4.

Injuries dating back to last year have forced him to play more of a bit-part role in the team.

Where Flynn stands out is in his vision, which ultimately resulted in the winning of the game.

The corner-forward’s raking delivery into the congested airspace brilliantly fielded by Kevin Feely led to Kildare’s late match-winner.

Monaghan, on the other hand, are vulnerable at the moment.

Donegal found it too easy to find space inside, taking advantage of the large gaps they were creating defensively.

This could be a defensive unit that Flynn could take advantage of if he starts.

The issue Glenn Ryan has with Flynn is he will most likely be followed around by Ryan O’Toole who is looking to redeem himself after a poor showing on Oisín Gallen last week.

O’Toole has been excellent in his role as an attacking corner-back and one must wonder will Flynn be fully fit enough to follow the attacking corner-back if he goes darting up the field.

For Kildare’s management they are between a rock and a hard place.

They will find it very difficult to leave Flynn out of the side after his superb performance against Roscommon.

As well as this being an ideal defensive system for Flynn to take advantage of in terms of finding space.

The question is, will he have the legs to stay with the Farney Men’s youthful attacking defenders?
