Mick O’Grady (Kildare) v Niall Murphy (Sligo)
Kildare made up in some way for their Leinster SFC final hammering to Dublin last year when pushing them all the way in the last four at the end of April and Mick O’Grady was key to their charge.
O’Grady has consistently proven himself to be one of the best defenders in the game and he expertly kept tabs on Con O’Callaghan that day as he added another high-profile forward to his hit-list.
The one consistent thing about Kildare is their inconsistency and whether or not Glenn Ryan’s Lilies can back it up and make a charge for the remainder of the championship remains to be seen.
They kick off with a tricky trip to Markievicz Park to face a Sligo side which secured back-to-back wins in Connacht, against London and New York, before being dispatched by 14 points in the decider by Galway.
Niall Murphy is one of the finest forwards in the game and he continues to rack up crucial scores for the Yeats men so his battle at the edge of the square with O’Grady will be fascinating.
Sligo will need Murphy to get the better of this duel if they are to cause an upset and get their All-Ireland SFC campaign off to a flyer.
