Lee Gannon v Diarmuid O’Connor
It’s going to be last week’s Footballer of the Week versus Dublin’s most in-form defender and their side’s Man of the Match in their last outing against Sligo.
After his side’s win over Galway, O’Connor spoke about having a cool head.
“We knew we had to let the shackles off and do the simple things right if we wanted to win,” said O’Connor.
“It’s not a position we wanted to be in but momentum is a massive thing and that’ll carry us into the quarter-final.”
For Gannon, two weeks ago, he spoke about the need for his team to constantly improve and reach the standards expected of his side.
“For us, it’s just about improving constantly and being more efficient both on and off the ball.
“I think at the minute, we’re probably halfway to where we believe we can be, but we know that’s not good enough.”
The Whitehall defender has been superb all season at bombing forward – landing three points in his last outing against Sligo.
But under McStay’s gameplan, O’Connor is well versed in knowing how Mayo’s wing-forwards drop back which no doubt will be closely focused on in an attempt to stop Gannon setting up any scoring opportunities.
This match-up will be the battle of two potential All-Star nominees.
