Galway have officially confirmed that Henry Shefflin will take over as senior hurling manager with Richie O’Neill as coach — a story first revealed by OurGame.

Galway have officially confirmed that Henry Shefflin will take over as senior hurling manager — a story first revealed by OurGame.

He will be joined by fellow Kilkenny native Richie O’Neill as coach, with the remainder of his ticket confirmed in the coming weeks.

In a statement, Shefflin says: “Managing the Galway Senior Hurlers presents a unique opportunity, and it is a challenge we are relishing to take on.

“We look forward to working with the players, the county board, and the wider Galway GAA community over the next couple of years.”

The statement continues: “Galway GAA is delighted to announce Henry Shefflin as the new Galway Senior Hurling Manager.

“Henry’s achievements as a player are unrivalled.

“As a manager, he has guided Ballyhale Shamrocks to All-Ireland Club titles in 2019 and 2020.

“Henry will be joined by fellow Kilkenny man Richie O’Neill as a coach and his management team will be finalised in the coming weeks.

“All in Galway GAA wish them the very best in their new roles

“Galway GAA also wish to thank everyone that participated in, and facilitated the selection process, including the candidates that put themselves forward as well as the interview panel for their diligence, commitment, and professionalism over the past few weeks.

“The appointment of Henry Shefflin to lead our flagship team underpins both our immediate ambition for Galway hurling as well as a commitment to building a sustainable development pathway for our young hurlers.

“This will be followed by the appointment of our Under-20 and Minor Management teams, as well as the Head of our newly constituted Adult Development Squad for 2022.”

Davy Fitzgerald was thought to be a front-runner for the job but the Sixmilebridge man will now enter 2022 with a top-level inter-county position.
