“I don’t think you’d get it in one of Shakespeare’s plays” — Brennan can’t wait for Davy v Lohan

Eddie Brennan is rubbing his hands together at the prospect of Clare meeting Wexford in Saturday’s qualifier.

With both teams having bowed out of their provincial championship at the hands of Tipperary and Kilkenny respectively, one county will now exit the championship entirely.

As has been widely reported, Banner boss Brian Lohan and Model County supreme Davy Fitzgerald are not on good terms and both will be amped up for this clash.

The All-Ireland goalkeeper and full-back duo from 1995 and 1997 have been at odds since clashing as Fitzgibbon Cup managers a number of seasons ago, and will this weekend meet in an All-Ireland SHC qualifier.

Fitzgerald will walk the line for Wexford while Lohan takes charge of their native Clare, hoping to get another win over his old teammate after last season’s back-door success.

“I think this is a very, very unique occasion,” says Brennan. “The magnitude of it, for me, is something you wouldn’t maybe even get in an All-Ireland final.

“I think there’s so much subplots, so much back-drop, I don’t think you’d get it in one of Shakespeare’s plays — there’s so much going on.

“I don’t say that lightly, I just think this has been building up and there’s obviously the two managers.

“I think this is the first and only time where 15 players going toe to toe… The magnitude of it and the impact of this… neither of them are obviously going to come out and say ‘come on and do this one for the gaffer’, but I think there’s just so much going on here.

“I’m getting out the popcorn for this one, and I’d love if there was about five different camera angles.

“I know I’m playing it up and dramatising it a little bit, but it’s just a massive game and there’s so much at stake. I can’t wait for this one.”
