Shane, Ryan O’Dwyer and Ciarán Carey remember the late Teddy McCarthy — one of Cork’s finest and a dual All-Ireland winner in 1990.
Ciaran Carey was in shock when he heard the news that Cork legend Teddy McCarthy had passed away suddenly.
Tributes have flowed in for the Glanmire man since his untimely death, and his is a name that will go down in history partly for his unmatched feat in 1990.
McCarthy was a key man for Cork in both codes as they claimed All-Ireland titles in hurling and football.
“We would have crossed swords a few times at the latter end of his career, and I was alive and well for 1990,” says Carey.
“That achievement, to win two All-Ireland medals in both codes — first time it has been done and hasn’t been done since.
“I would imagine it’s a feat that will never be done again.
“So I’d like to pass on my commiserations to his wife, family and friends.
“A terrible loss – a sudden death like that when it happens a family, it’s just unexpected and there will be a lot of people down there in shock.
“I was talking to a fella from Cork during the week and he was in shock, he knew Teddy well being from Glanmire. Grief is a different animal so…
“I was shocked myself when I heard it because my brother is playing Over-40s with us in the football and he’s the same age as Teddy.
“So you know, I suppose the big one there is to enjoy every moment that we’re here and make the most of it, because no one knows what tomorrow is going to bring.
“So yeah, it’s tough.”
