“Taking the mick” — Saint & Verney rage at comments unbecoming of a GPA chief

Shane Stapleton and Michael Verney discuss the recent comments by Donal Óg Cusack on the Tailteann Cup — which began this past weekend.

Shane Stapleton and Michael Verney have expressed their frustration at comments made by Donal Og Cusack of the Gaelic Players Association.

The former Cork goalkeeper this weekend said of the second-tier football championship: “The GAA schedule has two provincial football finals and the start of the Tailteann Cup, which if you haven’t heard of it, is a sort of Gaelic football Grand National for disappointed also-rans.”

Speaking after Meath’s 1-19 to 0-11 win over Tipperary in the tier-two competition at the weekend, Colm O’Rourke gave a withering response to his former Sunday Game colleague’s remarks.

“The gentleman involved, I wouldn’t pass the slightest remark on what he’d say about anything.

“So I didn’t find it in any way insulting. I thought it was a reflection of him, rather than anything else.

“The Tailteann Cup is a great competition. It did a lot for the likes of Westmeath last year and we saw Cavan and so many other teams taking it seriously.”

Stapleton and Verney both felt that the head of the GPA should not be denigrating a competition which is currently being contested by half of its football members.
