Ciaran Carey v Clare in 1996
A magical hurler during his era.
When Carey was asked in 2018 what the abiding memories of his career are, and taking the All-Ireland final defeats of 1994 and 1996 into account, he gave a colourful summation.
โThat I loved the game and gave it the respect it deserves,โ Carey said after a pause, before considering whether he got the most out of himself. โBeing honest, no.

“But sureโฆ well,โ and he threw his head back in laughter, โI loved Rothmanโs. Iโm off the fags but even if you take that into consideration, little things like that, surely I probably would have got a few more percent out of that.
โBut I donโt know, sometimes Iโd be thinking that, but then I knew I smoked so I trained extra hard to counteract that, and I suppose if the modern coaches were around back in our time, that was obviously going to improve you. But that was different times.โ
Carey then considered the different approach to coaching in the modern era, before settling on a black-and-white answer to the question of his talents: โdid I maximise my potential to the fullest while I was there? Definitely, yeah, I gave it the full monty any time I went out.โ
