The Waterford county board will this week make a decision on their Under-20 management for 2022 — with a ticket of Andy Moloney, Dan Shanahan and Ken McGrath thought to be in pole position.
Stephen Gough stepped down from his role as manager after three years in charge, with the Deise board currently holding interviews for the vacant position.
Donal O’Rourke from Cappoquin, who was Galway camogie coach under Cathal Murray, is being considered for the role.
So too is Gary O’Keeffe of Ballygunner, who was Waterford minor manager in 2021 and previously served as a selector with the ‘Gunners under Denis Walsh in 2015 and 2016.
Former De La Salle manager Ray Murphy and former Waterford and Westmeath boss Michael Ryan form part of O’Keeffe’s minor ticket this season, and may do so again.
The most high-profile ticket is headed up by Moloney and includes Deise icons McGrath and Shanahan.
Moloney is a former Tipperary and Waterford hurler, managed Ballyhale Shamrocks to All-Ireland glory in 2015, and has more recently been involved with camogie side Gailltír and Ballygunner underage teams.
McGrath is one of Waterford’s greatest ever players and was previously part of Michael Ryan’s Waterford management team, before taking over at his club Mount Sion.
Former Hurler of the Year Shanahan has coached his county’s men’s and women’s teams, as well as Deise club side St Mary’s.
A decision on the position is due to be made before the weekend.
