Debate: two points for scoring from play outside ’45

Shane and Michael debate how to make football more appealing to watch, with a discussion on awarding two points from scoring from play outside the ’45.

There has long been a debate — and even a short-lived trial — relating to awarding two points for converting a sideline cut in hurling.

Shane Stapleton and Michael Verney have often touched on this, and dismissed it on the basis that it is a great skill but is done under no pressure.

Stapleton explains how a person might ride a couple of tackles and then fire over a point at top speed from a narrow angle, and how that is far more skilful than a placed ball from a stationary position.

With football defined by blanket defences and the holding of possession for long periods, a section of the GAA public has become disillusioned with the spectacle.

This past weekend, we saw some fantastic long-range shooting from outside the ’45 from the genius that is David Clifford, allowing Kerry to bypass a Cork defence that had sat back.

Other stars such as Jack McCarron and Oisin Gallen also split the posts from distance for Monaghan and Donegal respectively.

For our co-hosts, it begs the question of whether converting from open play from beyond the ’45 might actually be a skill worth granting two points to.

Number one, it is rewarding the quality of a player, secondly, it might force defences to come out, and thirdly it might open the door for certain types of players to come back to inter-county level.

Colin Corkery was one of the greatest kickers of all time but it is difficult to know if he would be given an opportunity in this era of athletes.
