Former Dublin manager Paul Caffrey believes that Con O’Callaghan’s role sums up the beauty of how Dublin are evolving.

The capital are chasing an incredible seven-in-a-row of All-Ireland SFC titles this year and, though the Na Fianna man believes the dominance will soon come to an end, he is effusive in his praise of the team.

“That’s the beauty of how the game is evolving,” says ‘Pillar’ Caffrey. “While we in Dublin look at Con O’Callaghan as being an exciting goalscoring threat — every time he’s on the ball offensively, if he gets you one-on-one, I don’t think any defender in Ireland would stop him.

“But if Dublin are under sustained pressure, there’s every chance you’ll see Con back inside the 30-metre line putting the press on somebody.

“Paul Mannion was the same — he could be brilliant at taking somebody on into the Hill end and 30 seconds later you could see him chasing back trying to dispossess somebody.

“There is a naturalness in how the game flows, without having specified guys… you look at Niall Scully who has become an unsung hero in the amount he tracks, how he carries ball, and how his decision-making has improved so much.

“You will see him a lot in the defensive side of Dublin’s performance but you’ll also seeing him delivering balls, like he did for Con which caught Paul Murphy (of Kerry) out.

“He creates a lot of goalscoring chances by his ball-carrying, so there is a natural fluidity which wasn’t there previously.

“Or players were told; ’you don’t go past the halfway line with the ball’, whereas nowadays…

“Maybe it’s part of their downfall, but Kerry are putting together an exciting.. the wing-backs are ballcarriers, and (then) can teams get the balance?”
