“To me, that was a blatant red card”

Shane and Michael review the All-Ireland Under-20 final between Cork and Offaly and some of the tough tackling seen by The Rebels.

Michael Verney believes that Cork should have had a red card in their All-Ireland Under-20 final win over his native Offaly.

Faithful manager Leo O’Connor was unhappy with some of the tackling by the Rebels, including a hit on Cormac Egan and a rugby tackle by Eoin Downey on Dan Bourke.

“One or two things happened in the first half, absolutely cynical hurling and that leaves a bit of a sour taste,” said the Limerick native.

Meanwhile Rebels boss Ben O’Connor replied: “You do what you have to do to win and if you’re going to be looking at things like that after, you can go through them with a fine-tooth comb and there’s lots of mistakes on both sides.

“Look, we won by eight or nine points, job done for Cork.”

Verney and co-host Shane Stapleton had it out.

“Cork probably did rough up Offaly to some respect,” says the Offaly man.

“Roughing up is one way of putting it; if you have a physical advantage over an opposition, you try to use it and I definitely think they did.

“A lot of big physical hits took their toll as the second half went on.”

Shane Stapleton put it to Verney that he has been slating Cork for a lack of steel and backbone for years, and now he doesn’t like it when they go down that route.

“You’ve been slating Cork for years about not being men, that they couldn’t win a winter All-Ireland (2020)…”

“Cork senior team,” Verney interjects.

“You have been slating them for years,” Stapleton adds. “They fairly gave you a direct answer with that performance.”

Verney: “Well the Cork Under-20s gave an answer…

Stapleton: “Well maybe it was message to you considering everything you’ve had to say about Cork over the years.

“I highly doubt they were thinking about me,” laughs Verney. “You’d have to say for questioning their spine in recent years, they were not letting Offaly through.”
